Greek Business ahead of the European Challenge: State Strategy and Private Interests from the Association with the EEC to Democratic Transition.

Tsakas Christos

Type: Dissertations

The dissertation, by examining the domestic impact of prospective EEC-membership and focusing on the Europeanization of Greek business, analyzes Greece's European prospects into historical context. Considering the rapid transformation of Greek economy and society in postwar years, I argue that Greece's 'European strategy' constituted an element of continuity despite political turbulence hallmarked by a seven-year military dictatorship. Utilizing concepts from business history, European integration history and authoritarian studies, my dissertation project uses mixed methods, including extensive research in Greek and foreign archives as well as oral history techniques.

Key-words: Greek business, EEC, Europeanization, Greek economy, dictatorship, democratic transition
